Overview
Dr. Michael Howard is a board certified fellowship-trained shoulder & upper extremity surgeon. He specializes in state-of-art and minimally invasive techniques in arthroscopic surgery and shoulder replacement including reverse shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs, superior capsular reconstruction and tendon transfers. Dr. Howard also manages complex shoulder repairs, fractures, trauma, revision shoulder surgery and elbow/upper extremity surgery.
Dr. Howard was born in Dallas Texas and likes to say “raised in America”, (TX, NH, MO, KS). He received scholarships and graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University majoring in chemistry. While in college, he participated in varsity football & baseball, was active in K-life, FCA and his local church.
Dr. Howard earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas, completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, OH. Then completed a fellowship in upper extremity and hand surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS).
Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Howard went on to serve in the United States Air Force. Stateside, he served as an orthopedic specialist and was director of orthopedic medical education at Travis Air Force Base in California. During his deployment to Afghanistan he served as the chief upper extremity specialist.
Throughout his career he has focused on improving outcomes for his patients by refining and working on new and better technique. He is constantly keeping current through education and research. His publications include book chapters, presentations and multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Society (JSES), Orthopedics, and Journal of Arthroscopy. He also serves as a clinical reviewer for the Journal of Arthroscopy.
Dr. Howard is currently the head team physician for Plano West High School and associate team physician for the Frisco Roughriders. He also serves as a team consultant for multiple area high schools and routinely cares for collegiate athletes. He has consistently been named as a D-Magazine and SuperDoctors as a best doctor.
